The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle path surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel links the paths between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists attended a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem was a popular tourist destination due to its rich past. Elkin added that in addition to its historical treasures the modern tourist industry is included in the Jerusalem city. "The inauguration of [this] tunnel project is a further part of the development of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem and its transformation into a dazzling tourist city for all types of visitors throughout Israel as well as around the globe."

נווה פריצקי Elkin who's ministry responsible for the project, along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry invested hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism as well as in creating new ventures and attractions which will link the amazing historical past and future of Jerusalem. Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to alter the concept and transport in Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing cycle routes within the city and are being constructed in its diverse neighborhood. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycling among its residents, and promote a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate the main sewer line toward the Sorek purification plant.

Construction of roads installation, blowers, modern safety systems and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the current construction. The tunnel will be safe for the public to use throughout the season.

Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which includes a Biblical zoo and aquarium and also the ancient natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
